Are you ready for the new corporate India?

Graduates

Let’s face it. India has changed.

  • A ten-fold growth in revenues over the past 10 years…
  • Export turnover in excess of USD 60 billion by 2010…
  • An employment short fall of around 1 million people by 2008…

The Indian IT Services and BPO industry remains one of the highest growth sectors of the Indian economy.  Other industries in India like Telecom and Finance are doing equally well and growing at an astounding rate with profits skyrocketing like never before.

One of the key drivers of this success has been the ready availability of a skilled workforce. This pool of talent will continue to play a major role in taking the India ahead and keeping it globally competitive in the future as well.

So, where is the problem?

According to a Nasscom-McKinsey report, the industry will face a shortfall of half a million workers in a few years' time. But how can India possibly be short of workers with half of its 1.2 billion people under age 25? Doesn’t India churn out more than 2.6 million graduates and 495,000 engineers every year?
According to the same report, only about 10 percent to 15 percent of those graduates are fit for employment in the off-shoring industry. And hence the looming crisis: a shortage of 0.5 million skilled knowledge workers by 2010.

The problem is not quantity but quality of the workforce.

Fluency in English apart, employers complained that graduates lacked the ability to reason clearly, solve problems, think critically, analyze, work in teams and think creatively. Add to this lack of communication skills, cultural skills and business skills and no wonder we are seeing a dwindling confidence and growing intolerance among many global clients especially within the Indian IT Services and the BPO industry.

What does all this mean to you? With this change comes competition which means you need to develop new competencies in order to succeed in India today.

The questions you need to ask are:

How can you differentiate yourself in this crowded marketplace?

How can you be hired at your terms or get those coveted projects or promotions?

How can you be the chosen one?
